Taking a cognitive assessment can make a person nervous. To ensure they are comfortable, you should do the following:
Introduce the general concept of a Cognitive Check-In: Explain that the client will complete several short tasks designed to evaluate aspects of brain health such as attention, memory, and processing speed. Example language: “These activities measure how your brain processes information. Some parts may feel easy and others may feel challenging. This helps us understand your current strengths and opportunities for growth.”
Review the tutorial and practice trials with the client: Each assessment includes tutorials and practice rounds. Walk through these instructions with the client. They may press the “i” icon as many times as needed to relaunch the tutorial or watch a demo video. Ensure the client understands the goal of the task and how to respond. Always obtain verbal confirmation before moving forward.
Review interface controls: Orient clients to the radio buttons on the lower right. These buttons can be used to pause the Check-In, enter “Full Screen” mode, or exit the Check-In.
Explain the adaptive difficulty: Let the client know that Cognitive Check-Ins are intentionally challenging and that mental fatigue is normal. Each Check-In is designed to maintain an 80% accuracy rate. This means that as the client successfully completes trials, the difficulty level will automatically increase, making the task harder. When a client gets trials incorrect, the difficulty level will decrease, making the task easier. Emphasize to the client that “increasing challenge is expected and indicates the Check-In is working correctly. The system adjusts automatically to find the highest level you can perform accurately.”
Set Expectations about Duration: Let the client know that the amount of time it takes to complete an individual Check-In will vary. As a general guideline, expect 3 minutes per assessment, but note that the range may be between 1 minute and 10 minutes. Clients may take breaks between individual Check-Ins.
Once the client feels ready to begin, they should log into BrainHQ (with your assistance, if needed). They can begin the Cognitive Check-in by clicking on the Cognitive Check-in button in the center of their screen. They will be automatically guided through the process. Note that they do not receive feedback about their performance, and they do not have access to the regular BrainHQ training exercises until they complete their Cognitive Check-in.
